The studio

We make games for people who carry their worlds in their pockets.

NGHTHWLL Games is a three-person independent studio obsessed with handheld hardware, pixel art, and the feeling of booting up something new at 2am.

Origin story

Built in a basement. Shipped to the world.

NGHTHWLL started in 2019 when three friends got tired of waiting for the handheld games they wanted to exist. Mara had the pixel art chops. Dex had the engine code. Suki had the game design instincts. None of them had a plan.

The first game — a dungeon crawler that ran on a device most people had already forgotten about — sold 400 copies in its first week. That was enough to keep going.

Seven years later we're still building for handheld. Still three people. Still making the games we want to play.

How we work

Dev philosophy

01

Constraint is a feature

Every game we make is designed around the limits of the hardware. Small screen, limited palette, finite memory. These aren't problems to solve — they're the design.

02

Feel before feature

We prototype the feel of a game before we build any systems. If it doesn't feel right at 30 minutes, no amount of content will save it.

03

Ship small, ship often

We'd rather put something real in players' hands than spend two years on a perfect game that never ships. Patches exist for a reason.

04

Own the whole stack

We write our own engines, tools, and pipelines. It's slower upfront and faster forever. We know exactly why everything works — and why it breaks.

The crew

Three people. All the hats.

M

Mara Voss

Art & Animation

Mara has been drawing pixel art since she was twelve. She handles every sprite, background, and animation in every NGHTHWLL game. She also designs the swag.

D

Dex Okafor

Engine & Tools

Dex writes the engine, the build pipeline, the level editor, and anything else that needs to exist before the game can. He has strong opinions about memory allocation.

S

Suki Tanaka

Design & Audio

Suki designs the systems, writes the music, and does the QA. She is the reason the games are actually fun and not just technically impressive.

Follow the build

We document everything in the devlog — design decisions, technical deep-dives, and the occasional post-mortem.
